Country music documentary "Bluebird" will be screened at the Sedona International Film Festival

One of the largest member-supported organizations in Sedona, the Sedona International Film Festival is returning for its 26th year. The nine-day film festival will feature more than 160 films at three different venues around town – offering a dazzling array of genres and featured subjects in a caring community.

“We have such an incredibly wonderful and sophisticated film community here in Sedona,” says Patrick Schweiss, creative director of the festival. “They like to talk about the films. They like to discuss. They like to be challenged. They like to be entertained, and they like to be moved. You get all of that.”

The festival primarily focuses on independent films, documentaries and student films. Attendees can enjoy Q&As with filmmakers and the actors at some screenings. A party is held every night of the festival at a different venue with a celebrity guest. A few notable films you can anticipate include: Starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes” examines a turning point in the history of the Catholic Church based on real events between Pope Francis and Pope Benedict. “Bluebird,” a documentary about the famed Nashville venue the Bluebird Café, where many country stars have launched their careers. Expect to see musicians including Taylor Swift, Faith Hill and Garth Brooks. Produced and starring Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem, “Sanctuary” is a documentary about work to preserve marine life in the Antarctic.

New this year, the festival falls after the Academy Awards so attendees can watch those Oscar-winning flicks. The festival caps off with an awards ceremony. Look forward to a beautiful event in a stunning place. “I’d be foolish not to acknowledge the beauty of Sedona,” says Patrick. “You’re taken away by Sedona’s beauty outside and when you step inside, you’re taken away by the beauty of what these filmmakers have presented.” − Teresa K.
