Real Northern Arizona Weddings: What’s Trending

NAZ Wedding Trends

Like in any industry, trends come and go in the wedding business. We spoke with Jane Ferrell, owner and lead photographer of Sedona-based Jane in the Woods about what she sees as currently trending. From so-called “naked” cakes (No, these aren’t scandalous. They just don’t have as much icing as a traditional cake.) to wild, over-sized bouquets, here are the trends that you might spot at a wedding.

The Southwest

“Luckily for us, the Southwest is trending,” says Jane. She’s had clients rent giant cactus to put in their wedding photos that also feature a red rock backdrop. Succulents are also very popular. One Wild, Large Bouquet Many brides want to be carrying large, overflowing bouquets when they walk down the aisle. “One thing that stands out across the board with our brides is very wild, collected overflowing floral arrangement,” says Jane. “Gone are the days of small, simple 12 roses tied together. Across the board with almost all of our clients is a pretty giant, incredibly beautiful bouquet.”

Unique Details

According to Jane, couples are searching for unique details that will make their weddings one-of-a-kind. One example? “This bride had a custom painted leather jacket,” says Jane. “These custom jackets are actually a pretty widespread trend.”

Brides Wearing Multiple Dresses

Many brides may wear one formal dress for the ceremony and another more casual outfit for the reception. “A lot of brides will have their more formal dress for the ceremony, and get wild for the reception. Whether it’s a floral print, or we had a bride do like full-on disco sequins. It’s a party dress,” says Jane.

Brides Choosing Modern Bohemian Gowns

Jane says that many of her brides opt for modern bohemian dresses. Think lacy gowns with a fitted bodice and flowing sleeves. One brand, in particular, that’s popular is Australian-based Rue de Seine. The look is “definitely non-traditional,” says Jane. It’s also “wild and offbeat while still being feminine.”

The “Naked” Cakes

So-called “naked” cakes are recognizable by their lack of or just a tiny hint of an outer layer of frosting – exposing the dessert’s layers and filling. “Most people are choosing to have the naked cakes,” says Jane. “Everyone just wants a cool cake. And that’s what’s cool.”

Lush Tablescapes

Tablescaping or table-setting is when the staff designs every detail – from the candles to the utensils – in an elegant way. “Our brides in particular, I think a lot of people book us because of our tablescapes,” says Jane. “We bring in our own people so that every single plate and flower is positioned just so.”

Epic Landscapes

Many couples are searching for jaw-dropping photos featuring incredible settings. And Sedona delivers. “A big trend in weddings right now is epic landscapes. And people are seeking out Sedona for that specific reason,” says Jane. “Those are the pictures that get the most likes. When we go to Merry Go Round rock, that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.”

Hair Braids

As far as hair trends go, braids are popular. “Braid trends are popular and all over the place,” says Jane. “The sky’s the limit for braids. Little braids, big braids. A crown braid. There’s a lot of options.”

Red Dust on the Dress

This might just be our favorite only-in-Sedona wedding trend: red dust on the dress. Jane tells us that many brides who opt for a red rock ceremony love seeing the red rock dust on their dress. Just like you’d find on your clothes after a red rock hike. “Something that’s really cute that I absolutely love is that a lot of brides really want their dress to get all red at the bottom,” says Jane. “They love going out into the red dirt so that by the end of the night, their dress is ombre red.” “I wish it showed up more, but it looks amazing. When they’re walking around, it’s honestly just so sweet,” says Jane. “They’re just glowing in their red dirt.”

Sage

“A lot of people come here because they want a more non-traditional ceremony. They want a sage ceremony. They want a more nature-based ceremony versus a religious type of ceremony. Okay, an act with the earth with their vows. They want to connect with the Earth with their vows.” says Jane. A sage ceremony can take many different shapes. Jane has seen officiants sage wedding rings before they put them on the couples. Sage is typically lit on fire and is thought to be cleansing.“Sage cleanses the air and the past of objects and starts out on a new path.” says Jane.
