Native American Heritage Park Trail

basket, Native American Heritage Park Trail

Learn about the people who called our area home 1,400 years ago along the new Native American Heritage Park Trail in Camp Verde. The half-mile loop boasts interpretive-exhibit signs that educate hikers on the people native to the Verde Valley. The exhibits describe pit-house structures (12 pit houses were discovered on the 15.28-acre Native American Heritage Preserve that surrounds the trail) and include a Native American traditional-use garden. On Sept. 1, a new Yavapai-Apache Nation exhibit will open. The exhibit includes a wickiup village diorama, interactive iPads to access a variety of information, and Yavapai and Apache basketry including specimens on loan from Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott. The Native American Heritage Preserve will eventually be the site of the new headquarters of the Verde Valley Archaeology Center, stewards of the pathway. The land is privately owned, and the pathway is open daily from dawn until dusk. It is located on Homestead Parkway, which is the first stoplight east of I-17 off AZ-260.
