Go Flagstaff: Flagstaff Community Market

flagstaff community market

Welcome the change of seasons by taking a pleasant Sunday stroll through the Flagstaff Community Market. The agriculture and food-focused market - a festive meetup of farmers, families with dogs, home chefs and couples - is a good excuse to mingle with neighbors. Those who shop the market know that fresh foods taste better and are transported shorter distances, which means less of an impact on the environment. We also know that buying local directly benefits Arizona farmers and builds the area's economy.

MARKET FRESH

Teeming with Arizona-grown produce, meat and dairy products, the bountiful market also includes vendors that provide ready-to-eat, healthy foods to enjoy on the spot. Shoppers snap up items to accent their homes for fall while others peruse the pickles, honey, apple ciders and other hand-packaged items. The Flagstaff Community Market happens every Sunday now through Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. until noon, at the Flagstaff City Hall parking lot (211 W. Aspen Ave. in downtown Flagstaff). EAT YOUR VEGGIES

True flavors come out in the freshness of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Farmers bring fresh-picked and home-grown produce from Phoenix, Paulden, Camp Verde and Flagstaff. Josh Chance of Roots Micro Farm sells microgreens at the market and hand-delivers to local Flagstaff chefs. His urban farm is located only a few blocks from the farmers’ market in downtown Flagstaff. “We harvest the day of delivery. It’s as local and fresh as you can get,” says Josh.

COOL BEANS

Chilled, ready-to-eat (or take) treats from a variety of vendors include healthy and refreshing tastes such as lavender lemonade, turmeric chai and prickly pear popsicles. “Flagstaff Market is my favorite market that I do by far,” says Janet Walther, who works the Sedona, Cornville and Cottonwood farmers markets for AZ Pops. “It has the most variety of vendors and the most people.” The cool, all-natural artisan popsicles are made of real fruits with no dyes and no preservatives.

GRAB AND GO

Grab some food to munch while shopping, or take it across the street to Wheeler Park and enjoy a picnic under the trees. Your food choices are many! Baja Shrimp Street Tacos is a fresh, flavorful pick or stop by the Love Acai Bowls food truck for their signature bowl topped with granola, strawberries, bananas and an edible orchid.

FALL FOR HOME DÉCOR

Take a bit of the market home with you with fresh ideas found at the Flagstaff Community Market. Add some color with hand-stitched household textiles, fresh flowers or gourds. And, of course, watch for pumpkins in October.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE…

The Flagstaff Community Market has been so successful over the past 18 years that it has sprouted the Flagstaff Urban Flea Market, which happens on the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October. You’ll enjoy the eclectic mix of artisans and vendors who make and sell a variety of goods – all at the same location as the farmers’ market.
