Northern Arizona is the place to be in the summer,” says Meg Askey, the program coordinator and founder of the new Flagstaff Film Festival, explaining why a Tucson resident would organize a festival five hours north. Meg, a graphic designer by trade, has spent the last nine months preparing for the first annual festival, which takes place Aug. 9-16. Films will be screened at the Orpheum Theater (15 W. Aspen Ave. in downtown Flagstaff) with free outdoor programs taking place at other locations in downtown. Ticket prices had yet to be determined at press time.
Meg says the festival will be broken down into 12 to 15 themed programs that will include 15 to 20 feature films, 50 short films, and historical programs sponsored by the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Hopi Cultural Center. The majority of the filmmakers are students from Arizona and Southern California.
Meg, who claims she can “watch movies until my eyeballs fall out of my head,” has a specific vision for the festival. She expects it to draw visitors to the high-country, especially nature lovers who can hike in cooler temps during the day and watch movies at night.
“It’s going to be accessible to people who’ve never gone to a film festival – they will see well-made, high-quality film programs,” she says. “It will also appeal to people in the industry because that’s what the filmmakers need. We’ll have plenty of panel discussions and workshops. I see a mutual love of film bringing everybody together.”
