Powerchute Sedona's Ultra-Lite, a 'personal flying
craft,' gives riders a bird's-eye view of Sedona's
nooks and crannies

After moving to Sedona a few years ago, Bill Lionberger and his business partner started a local event-production business. As part of their service, they often looked into different adventure-oriented experiences they could bring to the area. But when they found a personal flying craft called Ultra-Lite, they decided it could lift off a business on its own. Soon after, they opened Powerchute Sedona, the town's only powered-parachute company and flight school.

The Ultra-Lite can swoop from low altitudes to thousands of feet above ground. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft, the characteristics of the parachute, along with a constant 26-30 m.p.h. speed, makes rolling, looping or stalling virtually impossible; even with a complete engine shutdown, you'll merely drift to the ground while maintaining directional control.

Powerchute Sedona's Ultra-Lites are flown by certified pilots, and their low-flying tours leisurely coast over Sedona's rugged topography, skimming mountaintops and dipping down into the valleys and canyons to provide a thrilling bird's-eye view.

Asked to describe the sensation of powerchuting, Bill compares it to "that scene in the movie Out Of Africa where the open cockpit plane glides from left to right over the environment. You probably wished you could do that. With this, you can."
