You'll see many Sedona landmarks over these 4.5 miles—and something extra, if you're 'eagle'-eyed
Striding down the backstretch of Little Horse Trail, hikers eventually reach Chicken Point. There, lounging on a natural rock bench, there's no mistaking terrific views of Broken Arrow and the back of The Nuns. But here's a true test for the "eagle"-eyed: Look to the left and try to spot a In addition to this red-rock menagerie, Little Horse Trail—a four-star, 4 1/2-mile (roundtrip) trek on relatively flat ground—offers an eyeful of signature Sedona landmarks, including Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Cathedral Rock, the Twin Buttes, and Chapel of the Holy Cross. The trail begins at the Little Horse and Bell Rock Pathway parking lot on Hwy 179. The two trails share a route for about a quarter mile before Little Horse Trail branches off to the left (follow the signs), meandering through a dry streambed and climbing steadily but moderately to a flat area filled with Arizona cypress and a forest of prickly pear cactus (see the cactus in full bloom in late spring, displaying white blossoms, and pink and purple fruit). It's here you have the best views of the Chapel and its surrounding formations to your left and the red rocks of the Village of Oak Creek to your right. Pass the Chapel Trail (a narrow, rugged, peaceful little trek to the Chapel parking lot worth exploring in its own right) on your left and continue through an old gate to the base of Chicken Point. To your right you'll see large chunks of rock eroded from the top of a nearby mesa that have collected near a slick rock streambed. Follow the trail for an easy climb to Chicken Point; it's a popular stop for Jeeps and mountain bikers so don't expect solitude. We've hiked out to the Point on many occasions and no matter what time of year we have always had company—especially if you count those stone animals looming above. DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy 179 south about 3.5 miles from the Y. Turn left into the Little Horse Trail and Bell Rock Pathway parking lot. Red Rock Passes are required to leave your car in this lot. Passes are for sale at the vending machine in the parking area. |
