Sedona PhotoFest

"The Other Woman" photograph by Scott Stulberg.

Whether your idea of a camera includes the latest-and-greatest digital SLR, your smartphone or (gasp) an archaic device that uses film, there’s something for every photographer at Sedona PhotoFest, presented by the Sedona Arts Center. This year, PhotoFest presentations take place at the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Sedona Red Rock High School June 5 and June 6. The first day is free and open to anyone interested in photography. Presentations include The Beauty and Magic of Sedona with Larry Lindahl, Adobe Keynote: Through the Eyes of Julieanne Kost and Canon Keynote: Jennifer Wu – Nature’s Elusive Beauty. (Jennifer was selected as one of the world’s 36 best photographers by Canon USA’s Explorers of Light program in 2009.) The seminars will be followed by an artists’ reception in the lobby of the performing arts center.

Tickets to the June 6 event are $50 for the full day. Learn how to take high-quality photos with your smartphone during Smartphoneography taught by nature photographer Tony Sweet from 9 to 10:20 a.m. Local travel photographer Scott Stulberg will discuss night photography during Afterglow: Shooting After Dark from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Time-lapse photographer Mike Olbinski presents Storm Chaser from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. During his talk, local dancers will premiere a production they call Restless Elements, which has been choreographed by renowned ballet choreographers Brandon Ragland and Fabrice LeMire. The day ends with Connecting Earth and Spirit featuring digital media artist Yorgo Alexopoulos from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

In conjunction with the festival, photography from the Sedona Camera Club will be on display during a juried exhibition at Sedona Arts Center June 3-8 with an artists’ reception on June 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. For both amateur and professional photographers, the first week of June is the time to be in Sedona, says Kelli Klymenko, SAC’s marketing director.

“The intimate, one-on-one time photographers get with some of the biggest names in the industry is going to be awesome,” says Kelli. “Everyone should be there.” – Erika Ayn Finch.
